They also studied reading, writing, poetry, arithmetic, and music. Athletic activities helped them to develop strength and coordination. Spartan education was different like, if a baby did not appear healthy and strong it might be left or die on a hillside. Spartans valued discipline and strength. From the age of 7, all Spartan children were trained to fight. Even girls received some military training. The differences between Sparta and Athens are the education of girls and boys, they have different rules, In Athens the boys are citizens, and the girls are like slaves, they couldn't go outside their house to walk or something, only when their husbands went to their house. And in Sparta the women could go outside their houses and if they husband don't arrived they can marry with other men. Role of women Athenians expected women to be good wives and mothers. These roles were respected because they helped to keep the family and society strong. Some women fulfilled significant religious roles as priestesses in temples. Athenian women had much less freedom than sparta women. Women could inherit property only if their fathers had no sons. Girls did not attend school. Sparta women lived the same simple life as Sparta, women were expected to be strong and healthy and ready to fight. Spartan women had many rights that other Greek women did not have, they were free to speak with their husband´s friends. |
